about

This is a song that's both light and heavy. It's about a cartoon character, yes, but also about what he represents to me: our capacity to make the same mistakes over and over and over. I call it being a "serial dumbass". I'm not really wild about the arrangement on this tune. When I find time I'd like to re-do it in a simpler, more acoustic stye.

lyrics

SONG FOR WILE E.

I knew Wile E.
when he was just a kid
He was smart, hardworking, had a future
But he couldn't lose face
He got caught up in the race
and falling down was just one more adventure

From the top
of the cliff
all you see is sky
blue and wide
when the ground runs out
you can't hold on to a cloud
but still you try

I knew Wile E.
when he was comin' up
Boy with a world of promise
Such a waste
that wild goose chase
Pride is strong
but truth is always strongest

Yeah, there's always someone faster
Always someone better
So pick up where you started, boy
Shake off that vendetta
Always some lucky bastard born to win
Let it go
while you can still get up again

I knew Wile E.
when he was just a kid
He was smart, full of heart, but couldn't listen
So it's no surprise, after seven hundred tries
He's still sure this time will be different

From the top
of the cliff
all you see is sky
blue and wide
when the ground
runs out
you can't hold on to a cloud
but still you try
